So how does the Malaysian government decide if you are part of the B40 group? The pandemic is also causing many Malaysians to move into lower income categories.

Malaysians are categorised into three different income groups: Top 20% T20 , Middle 40% M40 , and Bottom 40% B40.

Hence in July 2020 after , the Department of Statistics Malaysia DOSM further broke down the B40 income levels by categories to recognise those who are truly in need.







T20 median income in Kelantan, Perlis and Pahang, can be compared to the median income of the M20 group in Kuala Lumpur.



As we mentioned earlier, the Kerajaan needs to revise the household income classification as a lot of changes can happen over the years.

These refer to income groups in Malaysia, where B40 represents the bottom 40% of income earners, M40 the middle 40% and T20 the top 20%.

In order to ensure that Malaysia truly becomes a high income nation, the government will need to put in place plans to ensure that inflation is kept to a minimal, otherwise the increased cost of living will render the increased income level meaningless.
